i drive a 1981 westfalia aircooled van....i love my van, i have lived in it for over a year now, and i am riding it very carefully on a thrown rod. it is parked, but i had to drive it down the coast from crescent city with this little problem, and am now in ukiah.
i called our local VW repairman who runs notoriously high, he quoted me $4,000 to rebuild my engine! it CAN'T be that much, can it...? i can get another westy in better shape for that kinda money! if i HAD that kind of money.
can anyone give me any input, ideas, links, 800 #'s so i can see if it's possible for me to salvage my honey or if i should look for another vehicle? my van has a new starter, new battery, new brakes and master cylinder, new alternator....all in the last couple months, so you can imagine my dismay at throwing a rod after investing so much in other parts for her general well-being. oh and i finally got a cassette player...even payed to get it installed right....GRRR!
thanks in advance for your help...:)

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Thu, June 1, 2006 - 3:01 PMOne possibilty is the local Auto Zone. I think they have air cooled VW engines for about 1/3 of that outrageous price. You will still need someone to change the engine out (if you can't do it.) Beyond that finding a wrecked van with a good engine is another possibility. Good Luck! -

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Thu, June 1, 2006 - 3:32 PMhmmm, there was a mechanic calling around here for parts and not coming up with anything....time to get offline and make some calls, thanks for the tip! -

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Thu, June 1, 2006 - 4:17 PMYes $4000 is an insane, bend over here I cum price !
Do your parts search online. there are a lot of VW. sites. If you MUST drive, disconect the spark plug wire for the bad cylnder. unplug it at the distributer. the knocking will stop when you find the right one. If you're not comfertable doing it , get someone to give you a hand. If none of the four stops the knocking, it is a main bearing, not very likly though. You will have noticably less power with the wire off. but if you drive with it on you run a much greater risk of the engin seizing, can you say dead in the water ? A remanufactured eng. is probaly the best bet. I can,t imagen finding a used eng. those bus's are very popular, and you have to use a bus, not a Bug eng.
good luck

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Thu, June 1, 2006 - 4:23 PMOh, most importantly, a loose fan can sound like a bad rod to the untrained ear. Make SURE a mech. that knows something about V W's checks the fan befor proceding, I've seen this happen more than once ! -

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Thu, June 1, 2006 - 4:38 PMAH! yes, i called someone who was listed on the AIRS site who is near me (turns out he works for the guy who has the expensive VW shop, dang it!) but he did say if it was the rod, i would have a big hole in my crank case, i would not be able to limp it 180 miles, and i would be as you put it dead in the water. he said it is more likely that it is a bearing or..oh dang i forgot the other thing...
but can you possibly tell me if i can check to see if it is the fan myself? it is overheating a lot, the oil leak has not significantly increased. i thought at fisrt it had, but i just checked under the van and it really hasn't, it just drips more when it's overheated cause the oil on the engine heats off. it also blows greyoil smoke when it gets hot, boy that had me pretty excited till i figured out it wasn't engine blue, it was oil grey...whew! NO blue smoke.
it knocks when it gets hot, goes for about 50-60 miles (even up grades!) without the knock when i have let it cool overnight. i have been coasting down the grades to get here. that worked well.
the knocking itself does not seem to have gotten any more persistent or extreme in the 180 i have driven it. it is also very inconsistent, except under a load. it'll be knocking, then stop; it will knock, i'll change accelerator pressure, it will stop for a little while. if i have let it sit overnight, it knocks loud a few times when i first start and then nothing for the next 20-30 miles at least.
i was advised to put in a very heavy oil, to drain out some of the oil in it now and add a heavy duty oil and then top it off so the pressure is a little high, if i have to drive it around at all.
i can also buy another vehicle, i am looking at a funky 4wd toyota that has no camper or tailgate, ugh, such a step down for a lifestyle traveller who is used to having a little home on wheels! but at 1,000, the toyota is reliable and so far, cheaper than fixing my van. -

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Thu, June 1, 2006 - 6:10 PMFirst, look at your watch, keep looking, keep looking. OK, that's about a long as a 4wd $1000.00 anything is dependable ! The other thing you could be suffering from ( engin wise anyway) Is a bad wrist pin, still an engin rebuild ! But to tha Fan, That sound can come and go with engin heat. To check it requires removal of the fan shroud, or cover. It is made of thin sheat metal and covers the center part of the eng. It's job is to direct air on the engin to cool it. With it off, you can see the fan, no it does'nt look like a house fan ! It's a fairly large heavy looking thing. Try to move it side to side, if it does, it's bad. you will proably hear it clank a little. If you don't feel you can do this have someone with some mech. appitude follow these instructions. the fan shroud MUST be replaced, or the eng. won't cool at all. maybe the spirt wants you to stay where you are for awhile, concider this in your disscision. If you decide to buy something , get it as cheaply as possable, and spend $ on bringing it up to speed your self. By the way, where the hell are you ? -

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Thu, June 1, 2006 - 6:24 PMwe're in ukiah california. i was born and raised in this (mendocino) county, and am definitely feeling the desire to come home. but...i want to go to the rainbow gathering in colorado first, i really want to do the CALM camp and get valuable onsite first aid experience with talented herbalists and such...then i was considering going to new orleans for some relief work before coming back to cali in september to settle down for a bit. eventually i want to have a home base here that i can road trip to where my energy is needed, but also have a garden etc. anyway, i have immediate plans already for travel, i already bought a friend a plane ticket (leaves tomorrow from new orleans) and another friend travelling with us..i'm the glue holding it together so i need to get something worked out in the next couple weeks.
the other thing i was told it could be is a dropped valve. whatever that is. i know my seals are pretty shot, hence the oil leak...i had one side fixed then the other sprang. i have a broken rocker mount as well.
the knocking also goes from quiet to loud to quiet, erratic like that, and i do not notice it getting worse or better on different types of road (rough or smooth highway).
so whats yer beef on 4WD? ....just curious, it is a toyota which i love...toyota has always done me right and then some. -

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Thu, June 1, 2006 - 7:47 PMfirst if you don't NEED a 4wd don't buy one. Worse gas milage, more to break, more exp. to repair. 4wd's are worth more $ on the open market so if one is only 1000.00 it HAS PROBLEMS ! Toy's are great, $ 1000. 4wd's are close to junk.
I live south of Atlanta, and am in touch with what;'s happening in New O' . As admerable as you desires to help in N.'O.are, Unless you're skilled in the construction trades I wouldnt recomend going. They don't need or want any other type of help right now. To many people have gone down just wanting to "Help out". And have placed more of a burdon on the housing situation. They have plenty of bodies, now they need skill, and building materails. Just a thought. Hang in there -

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Thu, June 1, 2006 - 10:18 PMyeah, thanks, i have a good friend who has been working down there as a volunteer in construction for about 7-8 months, non-stop. he says they need help on a lot of different levels, and i am always self-sufficient with my own housing on the road. i have lived in my van for the last year. :) he is the one who i am travelling with in a couple weeks to colorado. he is very plugged in with what is going on there and is excited about helping us find a place to lend a hand. i don't expect to be a burden on anyone.
many of the people who are working there are getting very sick with staph. my friend has had 2 friends lose limbs to it, one lost his leg, the other a finger. i happen to know how to treat staph, from personal experience, and if nothing else, if i can save a limb or two, my energy will not be burdensome.
anyhow, this thread is about my van, not about new orleans or anything else. thanks for your input!

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Thu, June 1, 2006 - 10:40 PMHey Sister try looking up some local Rainbow Family. 9 out of 10 times they got a master vw mechanic in their mist. I mean you are in like Arcata so the chance are pretty good. I just looked in the most recent issue of the Rainbow Guide I have & didn't see many in your area that would be helpful but theres one group who might have a Mech connection. "One Love Family Network. PO Box 1008, Arcata, Ca 95518, PH. # 1-800-242-0363 ext.# 5563." If you can make it as far as Weed theres good family there that would help you at a place called "The Buddha Belly Cafe, The Village Oracle, 51 Main St., Weed, Ca 96094, 530.938.1331 www.thevillageoracle.com ". All good Rainbow Family that run the place. many of them drive VWs. They helped me & my brother Wiggly when we got stuck there in my little Escort during a snow storm. Hope spirit moves mountains for you. Good luck Sister and hope you & your little one make it home to the Colorado Gathering. Tell Water-Singing-on-the-Rocks from CALM Gypsy from Cali sends his love. I can't make it home this year. :-(

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 9:11 AMhey nux,
sounds like a dropped valve seat to me. It also sounds like you have a bad valve... what you need;
a compression test.. this will answer your questions...
but either way knoking noises are never good. vabagon motors are expensive (one of the reasons why I stick to the bay windows, especyaly the pre-FI ones.
assuming I am right, a new head installed will be close to a grand. just so you know.
As far as replacement vehicles, have you thought about the 80's LS Vans that Toyota made? they are good and usually pretty inexpensive. for 4wd I like the late 80's early 90s isuzu troopers.. hope that helps -

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 11:39 AMthanks duncan...i am definitely looking at toyota for a replacement vehicle, and if i knew i could fix the engine for a grand, i'd do it in a heartbeat...i'd just worry that the next thing WOULD be a rod or something, because it seems like she's hitting her max on parts, i've already replaced starter, alternator, mastercylinder, etc. i am currnetly hoping to get a small loan for a toyota longbed w/camper and lumber rack (woohoo! hauling tipi?). the one thing i wonder abouttoyotas though....just what is the standard max milage for engine life? i gave a 77 to food not bombs in the bay area 20 years ago and it is still running onthe same motor....whut! yes! for real! so the one i am looking at now is not 4wd, but i am not looking for 4wd actually, just looking at what's available.
i have been wanting a toyota van for a while, but i'm only finding one right now and it's kinda far away...need to call the guy back. thanks for the info on those though, i don't know much about them and have wondered for a long time. i am a toyota fan. of course....a VW fan too...i love my van SO much...you should see my curtains!....but i can't afford a rebuild. -

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 1:31 PMim not a huge fan of the AC vanagons; they had a short run so parts are hard to get, but they are comfy to drive i know.
where is your van now? where are you looking for your next car? big cities offer more variety.
toyotas are usually good for 250-300K miles BUT if the toyota is an 83-89 with a carberator, and that carberator goes bad, the replacement cost of the carbs is VERY VERY high. This was the time when they were trying to meet rising emmisions requirements by retrofitting carbs with all kinds of fru-fra... best look for a Toyota that is fuel injected.
also ask when the last time the timing belt was changed.. they need to be changed every 60K, so if the gut says "I dont know" and the odometer says 180K, then add 400$ for a timing belt change.
The trucks are good travel vehicles... but if you could find one of those chinook camper conversions youd be way more comfortable.
well good luck on your search -

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 1:40 PMthanks, the VW van is in ukiah...i am hoping to look at an 86 toyota van for $800 today, he jacked the price $100 cause he just got it smogged. says the tranny and engine are really good....but after hearing what you have to say, i am thinking i may be better off with the little truck, though it is a LOT more money and an earlier year. beh! well the timing belt is one of those things that you replace it when it's not busted, before it goes, cause when it goes you're dead on the road...i would hate to have that happen....
i did go down to the dismantlers today asking for a 81 aircooled engine, and they have one, but i suspect it's there for the same reason mine is on its way there...i'd hate to buy a engine pay for it to be put in and have it be fried.
if i did a compression test...isn't it the same thing to go up hills and losing power measn loss of compression? i have no power loss on hills above and beyond the norm for an 81 aircooled, which for mine is actually really good. i hit the top of a grade at 50 the other day! whut huh!
well thanks a lot for your input, every little bit is helping a lot, i am trying to make the right decision quickly and your info has been really helping. feel free to advise away! -

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 3:46 PM800 isnt a bad deal on the van (at least in Portland).
is the vand fuel injected?
a compression test will tell you if you have bad valves or bad rings. a dropped valve will only minor los in power. -

Re: threw a rod...need input!
Sat, June 3, 2006 - 8:07 AMi loooked at the toyota yesterday, the back door is about to fall off and i can see about two inches wide of sky all the way across because the rust is so bad on the door. there is also a whiny sound and my guess is the tranny, but when i tried to take it to third it was laggy and over 35 the wind howls in the rust holes on the front too loud to hear anything else. decided NO on that one, even if it is 800, i see a new tranny in it's near future....i'd rather not poison my passengers with exhaust coming up from the back through the door, which is held on with a bungie...
so frustrating!
