I looked into converting a scjool bus years ago and got stopped at the cost of insurance. The only insurance I could find required that I have homeowners insurance first (kinda defeats the poupose.. doesnt it?) So what do y'all do for vehicle ins.?

Im not an idiot Leo. I talked to several insurers, looked at RV policies all of them (that I looked at) specificaly excluded RVs based on school bus platforms, which means, Leo, that if you lie to them they will take your money, but the day you have an accident and actually need your insurance they will say "hey your policy exculdes RVs based on school bus chasis" and you are seriously fucked. So, Leo, do you have a policy that DOES NOT exclude school bus-based RVs? Great, Tell me the name of the company. Id appreciate it, but I cant afford to scam on insurance... They have the lawyers and they always win.

The RV insurance places that I talked to also required a photo (probably to exclude school bus based chasis)..

      any other info?

calm down there friend. I don't think I called you an idiot at any point.
I know that the AAA insurance we have does not exclude school bus conversions (although we roll an MCI). Check it out, it may work out for you.

        Peace

Maybe you didnt call me an idiot Leo, but your reply was condesending and assumed that I hadnt done any homework (which I did, although it was someyears ago)... you could just have easily said "AAA insures school bus conversions".

Thanks for the lead. Im not sure where I am headed with myy life plans, but the combination of Tiggs bus sles (heck I live in Portland) and AAA insurance opens up some doors.

We insured our Schoolie with GMAC through Good Sams Club. They were ok with it being a bus conversion. It had to be registered as an RV though.
            Good luck.

Thanks that will go in my schoolie note book

Registering as an RV.. In Oregon that simply requires a sink and a stove to be a motor home, is that the same as an RV?

RV & Motor home same. I live in Portland also Duncan & I hear that Oregon is being anal about not letting Skoolies be registered anymore as RV/Motor Homes, unless they already were prior to the new law. I'm not sure of the details of the law & can't remember when it went into affect but I've been hearing about it for a few years now. BTW if you get a Skoolie will you keep your micro? VW are great! Be worth hold & attach & pool behind the Skoolie you get. Also my friend Moki is part of a small VW Van club that meets once a week at the Lucky Lab if you are interested.

hey hanks for the update. If Oregon gets anal I can always register it in WA.. The joys of living near a state line. . .

Ive been to the lucky lab and met Moki.. cool folks. The VW is good for travel but I am conidering buying some aw land somewhere and building a house when my son gets older.. The skoolie would be the transitional home/guesthause. I have lived in a VW van butI want a little more room then that now...

                    Duncan,
                    Definitely check out GMAC.

We have been insured with them for a year now only 130 for six months. If you sign up with good sam first, then register with gmac through good sam, i believe then its only around a hundred and 30 for the WHOLE year!

We are registered on our title as a motorhome.~ Pixie

Thats great, but you probably dont have a portland address.. it costs twice as much to insure my car as my house!

Hm. I've had no problem with AAA though one has to be a member to join up. They only required the VIN and name. I didn't tell them it was a school bus *g*.

Eventually, they will wanna see it I'm sure but for now, its insured and has so for a year now. The renewal is next month soooooooooooo......I'll cross my fingers that they don't ask to see what it is they are insuring, yet. Voyage is not yet ready to make a trip *g*

Otherwise all other advice is quite useful here and I wish you best of luck!

dont know if you've got it there or not. i lived there 2 years but didn't think about it. here in the midwest we have our local farm bureau. do they have this up there. all kinds of insurance. from life, property, crops, etc. you have to become a member, its 25 bucks. then the insurance for my motorhome (they know its a school bus conversion), was 325 for the year. there may be something like that up there. good luck finding something to keep you on the road.
